Korla Fragrant Pears

Here in Korla, there's a noticeable buzz on the street every time fragrant pear (香梨) season rolls around. A good percentage of the local Uyghur population is involved in picking and packing the pears, with migrant workers pouring in from poorer areas in southern Xinjiang. Soon, the roads leading from the city will be clogged with trucks overloaded with freshly packed boxes, rushing the crispy fruit to wealthy consumers in Hong Kong and Japan. Mohammed - a Uyghur friend who's family owns quite a lot of fragrant pear trees - invited me out to his orchards near the Korla airport to take a look at the harvest. I brought my camera, of course:

Mohammed, in the white sweatshirt, introduces me to some members of his family. They were more interested in the pears.

Delicious, ripe Korla Fragrant Pears, ready for the pickin'.

A Uyghur pear picker picks pears.

After being wrapped in paper and a protective foam sock, these pears will be packed in boxes and shipped off to refrigerated storage. In a few months, when the price is really high, they'll be sold for lots of RMB.

Migrant Uyghur pear pickers get back to work after a lunchtime break.

CHINA TO EXPORT XINJIANG PEARS TO US AFTER LONG NEGOTIATIONS
29 September 2006
Asia Pulse

BEIJING, Sept 29 Asia Pulse - China is to export fragrant pears specially grown in northwestern Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region to the United States - after 13 years of negotiations.

Sources with the State Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (SAQSIQ) said on Thursday the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) had approved the exports.

The decision came after two U.S. experts examined orchards and packing factories in Xinjiang last month to ensure the Chinese quarantine system met the U.S. requirements.

China first applied to export fragrant pears to the U.S. in 1993, but not until last December did the two sides reach an agreement on quarantining the produce.

The fragrant pears are produced in Xinjiang's Korla City, which had 23,333 hectares of orchards last year with a yield of about 120,000 tons.

The pears are sold in major Chinese cities and exported to Canada, Australia and other countries that have strict quarantine requirements.

Tasty photos. That location that you provide in Google Maps, here it is, saved at Tagzania.

Just an example of the usage of this tool. It's easy: you find something on Google Maps, then you use the bookmarklet and it gets saved at Tagzania.
Afterwards, you can get the code to embed the map, and paste it in your blog, like these people did. Enjoy .-)

I have tasted this pears got it from the Great wall here in Kent, Washington, the taste is divine! Would somebody tell me if anyone sells the tree itself, to plant here in America?

I saved the seeds, will try to germinate it, see what happens. It would take 7 years to flower though if it started from seeds.
