I don't have any plans to live in Xinjiang again. I'm pretty happy working in Beijing, and I like living here.

Did you at least find the Uighur resturaunts in Beijing? The best one is one a little north of the zoo. Then there are two near the College for minority children.

BEIJING (Reuters) - Thousands of people have been made homeless by an earthquake on Sunday in remote Qapqal, in China's far western region of Xinjiang near the Kazakh border, the Xinhua news agency said on Monday.

The earthquake, which measured 5.0 on the Richter scale, hit an area inhabited by the Xibe people, a community originally from Manchuria that established a frontier garrison in Xinjiang during the Qing dynasty.

It destroyed nearly 200 homes and damaged nearly 3,000 buildings on Sunday morning. No casualties have been reported so far.

More than 4,500 people have been moved to schools, government buildings and tents, in two counties about 700 km to the west of the regional capital, Urumqi, Xinhua said.

Thanks for the firework videos. Make me wonder why people turn such an enjoyable plaything into killing machines. Chinese have fun with fireworks for thousands of years but in the hand of foreigners they quickly got repackaged with shrapnel for blowing onto opponent's face.
Lets insist in our peaceful ways of progress towards prosperity.

As spec has stated, the Xibe's are of Manchu descent who were sent there to protect the frontier. The Qing often relied more on the rugged Hui (and in this case, their own) rather than the docile Han. I wonder if the Xibe still speak their ancestral language, or have they adopted Mandarin. If the former is true, they will be the only population left who still speak Manchu.

Wish my video of fireworks in Shenzhen came out as clear as yours. Then again, I'm using an old camera that wasn't intended for that purpose.

Frank, you might want to do a bit of reading on Chinese history. They were not so stupid that they didn't realize the potential of gunpowder for weaponry. Now, they didn't carry gunpowder to its heights of destruction (although the Chinese did invent firearms), but that is more to do with post-Song Dynasty stagnation than any sort of high minded nobility of the Chinese. As for thousands of years, please. Don't be silly. Black powder was developed in the ninth century and applied to warfare very quickly (Recall, the Chinese are not as stupid as you think). In actual fact, fireworks were developed after the military uses of black powder.

I believe the Xibe still speak Manchu, or some variant of Manchu. I had the chance to visit the area they live and came across many people speaking a language that sounded quite unlike a Chinese dialect. Either they still speak it or they put on a good act for the tourists.

My own suggestions for a very good Xinjiang restaurant in Beijing: Crescent Moon, Wanwanyueliang (弯弯月亮), sorry but I only remember the Chinese name... the address: 北京市东城区东四六条16号 - not too far from Zhangzizhonglu station on line 5, but maybe not easy to find since it's in the hutongs... or well you can take a cab.

Be sure to taste their stuffed breads (烤包子), they're great! The boss is a cool Uyghur guy with a distinctive goaty, and all the waitresses (sometimes some waiters too) are Uyghurs (or at least other minorities of Xinjiang).
