My guess was going to happen it would be in Khotan and Gulga. Places like Kashgar and Kuche just have too many police on the street and fear in the air. Maybe that is what is causing it.

KUQA, China (AP) -- Assailants using homemade bombs attacked a shopping center and hotel and battled with police Sunday in a western Chinese city far from the Beijing Olympics where local Muslims have waged a sputtering rebellion against Chinese rule. Ten attackers and one security guard died, police said.

The pre-dawn violence in the restive Muslim region of Xinjiang came despite tightened security for the games and followed threats by an al-Qaida-linked militant Islamic group to disrupt the sporting event.

Sunday's attack and an assault on border police Aug. 4 that left 16 officers dead marked a dramatic increase in violence in the region.

Police said ''violent terrorists'' attacked a shopping center, hotel and government buildings in the city of Kuqa in west central Xinjiang.

Without providing details, the police statement said officers killed eight attackers and another two blew themselves up, while two were arrested. Three attackers were at large, it said.

In a more detailed account, the state-run Xinhua News agency said the bombs were made from bent pipes, gas canisters and liquid gas tanks.

One of the largest attacks involved assailants who drove a three-wheeled vehicle with explosives into the compound of the public security bureau at about 2:30 a.m., Xinhua reported. An explosion followed that killed the security guard, injured two police and two civilians, and destroyed two police cars, it said.

Police opened fire on the attackers, killing one. Another blew himself up, injuring a third, and a fourth was captured in the assault, Xinhua said, citing an unidentified local government spokesman.

Six hours later, a battle broke out in a nearby market where police found five attackers hiding under a counter, Xinhua said. The men hurled bombs at police, who fatally shot two of them, while the remaining three killed themselves with their own bombs, the news agency said.

Xinhua said the captured suspect told police 15 people were involved in the attack. Police, who said three attackers were at large, also seized a taxi used by the bombers.

Police declined to confirm the Xinhua account or comment on the discrepancies between the report and the official news release.

Wang Wei, vice president of the Beijing Olympic Organizing Committee, called the attacks the work of ''East Turkestan terrorists'' -- the name some separatists use for Xinjiang -- and said no government would tolerate such violence.

''The very purpose of these attacks is all about separating the region from China,'' Wang told reporters. He said the attackers ''want to use the Olympic stage to enlarge the impact.''

Authorities shut down Kuqa county, a region 1,740 miles west of Beijing where some 400,000 people live, for most of the day. Soldiers with machine guns patrolled the streets and people were told not to leave their homes. A Foreign Ministry official in Beijing, speaking on customary condition of anonymity, said the restrictions were akin to martial law.

Police picked up an Associated Press reporter and photographer while they were reporting Sunday near the scene and drove them to a hotel where they were kept for hours. On the way to the hotel, they saw one of the explosion sites: a storefront in a line of shops was burnt out, and a three-wheeled vehicle parked in front of the store was completely charred.

After several hours, people were allowed to go back into the streets, though most shops stayed closed. People gathered on the sidewalk outside the places that had been attacked, including a bank, which had its facade covered with a red, white and blue tarp.

A Western tourist in Kuqa, who did not want his name or nationality mentioned for fear of the response from Chinese authorities, said he heard the explosions while he was in bed reading.

''I heard some bombs and then I heard some machine guns,'' he said. ''The bombs sounded like thunder far away.''

''We came down to the lobby this morning and it was breakfast as usual,'' but no one was allowed to go outside, the tourist said.

Residents in the street discussed the attack among themselves, but were reticent to talk to a reporter.

''This doesn't usually happen. It's happening now because of the Olympics, but I don't know who is doing it,'' said one man, a construction worker, who wouldn't give his name for fear of official retaliation.

On Thursday, a video purportedly made by the Turkestan Islamic Party was released in which the militant group threatened to attack buses, trains and planes during the two-week Olympic competition.

The group wants independence for Xinjiang and is believed to be based in Pakistan, where security experts say core members received training from al-Qaida.

Xinjiang is home to the Uighurs, an 8 million-strong Muslim minority with a long history of tense relations with the Chinese.

it otherwise looks like just the kind of place i'd love to visit. turpan was the closest i got to those pictures. i spent a lot of time a couple years ago talking to a number of uighurs, and less time this last year. i can understand the discontent. it's just very sad that this is how it is expressed. xinjiang needs a pr campaign real bad, and this isn't going to do it.

Kuqa was the site (and nearby Toksu and Shayar) of bombings, police station attacks, and political murders during the late 1990s.

It was in relation to Kuqa and the supposed escape of several Uyghur 'freedom' fighters across the Taklamakan to Hotan that the term Uyghur 'freedom' fighter was first coined by emigre Uyghur groups concernining these activities, I understand.

The recent Kuqa incident should then be seen in the context of a succession of anti-Han resistance in Kuqa.

Xinjiang’s Strife Reverberates in Beijing

Though far from home, Xinjiang residents in Beijing felt the effects of the deadly terrorist blasts in their home territory in northwestern Xinjiang early Sunday morning.

One 22-year-old wife of a Xinjiang restaurant owner in Beijing, a member of the Turkic-speaking largely Muslim Uighur ethnic group native to the territory, said she and her employees heard from family about the explosions early Sunday, before anything had been reported on the Chinese news. “This isn’t good,” she said, shaking her head. “These things make people in Beijing think we’re bad people.” (Names were not used because the subjects could face reprisals.)

Most of the restaurant’s employees have typically been Uighurs, but it’s been increasingly difficult in the run-up to the Olympics for them to remain in Beijing because of increasingly strict security. Uighur separatists have been blamed by the government for a series of recent bombings and other violent incidents, so authorities have been tightening restrictions on Uighur residents. “There used to be lots of Xinjiang people here [in Beijing],” she said. “Most of them have left and gone home this year. We even lost our cook.”

The cook had worked at her restaurant for years and was asked to leave during a security check earlier this year, the woman said. The woman said the cook was able to stay before because no one ever asked for identification, but in recent months the authorities did checks on all of the Xinjiang restaurants in Beijing. When they saw the cook didn’t have his ID, he was forced to go home.

“It’s happened to a lot of people; even business owners. There were many Xinjiang people here running restaurants and selling food but they all said it was becoming too much of a hassle,” she said.

The woman’s husband, the owner, has run their small restaurant in Beijing for years. During lunch the place is packed with customers from China’s majority Han ethnic group. Relations between Uighurs and Han are often tense, but “Xinjiang food is popular here,” the woman says. “We tailor ours to Beijing tastes. Beijingers like lots of tomatoes in the dishes.”

Still, the couple doesn’t enjoy living in the city; they say local residents can be cruel to them, especially now. In many instances, she says customers go to her restaurant and mistreat her by spitting on the table. When she asks them to stop, they threaten to call the police, a threat she says is commonly made toward Uighurs here. “I just say to them, ‘Who do you think you are? Go ahead and call the police. I don’t care what ethnicity you are, you’re wrong,” she said.

“There’s good and bad in every group,” she said.

But the perceptions of Uighurs in Beijing are enough to keep her away from Olympic venues, she said. “We don’t have time to go to the Olympics, but I don’t want to be there anyway,” she said.

Is this really a big issue? Things like this happen again and again elsewhere. There are always people trying to do things like this, for political, religous or may be personal reasons. In 2001, I even receiced a request letter asking for support of Chinese people for an independent Texas.That's just odd. Can not find the website now. Luckly they have not started blowing things up in America yet.
The history of past 2000 years in China could be viewed as a long lasting battle between those who wanna be some sort of leaders themselves and those support the integrity of the country. It will never stop. As a culture, people in this country believe in the integrity is more important. When you set up the priority, things less significant are sacrificed for something bigger. We call that a differrent value system. This kind of thought is anywhere in Chinese culture. People who united the whole country are always described as heros. For thousands of years, it's never been changed.
About Chechnya, I am not a russian, though have learnt about that country, and I don't understand how russian people are thinking about that. Then again, that's another countries' interior affairs.
Actions against the whole race are stupid and are condemed elsewhere on the internet here. I have met many people from Weiwu'er ethnic group and they're not bad mates. On this point I agree with you, miloservic.
What happened now is minor compared those bombings in 1990s, and is nearly nothing contract to the big chaos in 1970s.
As for Loretta's blog, there is no surprise. I sort of expected that things like this would occur. I don't why is that? The influce of the mess media? People tend to be negative but don't care about what really happened. As said in the blog, the cook didn't have his identification. In china, every person has their Identification Card and Number. In some way, it's like the national insurance number. If the cook really lived in Beijing without a proper identification, then the local police should be held responsible because they have not found this out earlier. Lossing one's ID is not a big deal. I am actually applying for a new ID now. People only have to go back to where their ID is registered and spend 30~40 for an anouncement in any local newspaper, then they can go to the public security office and apply a new one. The attitude of the police officers may be rude as in some areas, but that's about it. Also, I can only guess the reason why this blogger hasn't mentioned the same scrutiny applies to all Chinese citizens, and foreigners. Micheal has been in beijing before and might have heared from his friends all of sudden the local plice forces began to check every foreigners' passport, and esp whether their visa has expired.
I understand these kinds of cherry-picked stories do sell and attract attention. And its target audience is western people. Still quite wired for me,who grow up here, to read such an article.
