Tianjin TV, tonight!

It's official... in less than 24 hours the entire country will know that I'm an ass. If you're in the Middle Kingdom and own a television, make an effort to watch China Right Here on Tianjin TV tonight (Saturday) at 6pm.
Hear me talk about never leaving Xinjiang, always being the sundried tomato king, and various other nonsense. Watch me ride a camel, as if that's something I did every day. Sigh.
The previous entries about making this program are here and here. I'll try to get a copy of the show and upload it to YouTube someday, unless one of you beats me to it.

too bad you didnt mention how you support uighur separatists. that would have made the show more interesting.
Dont know why so many chinese people are giving you praise, you support uighurs who wish for china's dismemberment.
god im embarrassed that china gives so much praise to worthless foreigners. you think american tv would ever put chinese expats on their shows?
god, sometimes i dont understand my country, why do we put foreign idiots on our tv and give them so much praise? not just you micheal, but others as well.

@cripe: I don't support Uyghur separatists.

Michael,
What I am promoting right now is about few policies changes regarding Uighur:
1. Reverse bilingual education--Instead of only minority students to learn Mandarin--Min Kao Han, also Han students to learn minority languages--Han Kao Ming. Of course, first emphysis is on Uighur language but hope to include others in the future.
2. Require every government officials to be true bilingual. That means all Hans need to able to speak Uighur.
3. Very important for Uighur to catch up in Job market is about Career Vacationing Schools. It needs much much more than what average in China nationwide. But this one needs a LOT effort just not from government but also from NGO (domestic and oversea). This one needs everybody's cooperation and it is very important those foreign NGOs are not subscribed to Free ET slogan. (What problem in Tibet is that China cannot trust any foreign NGOs). If that happens, then the final victims are rurul Uighurs who need the most for this kind of training to get in Urban life.
But we know all US media and Congress are trying to do to wrack the hell on it.

@cripe,
"god im embarrassed that china gives so much praise to worthless foreigners. you think american tv would ever put chinese expats on their shows?"
Why do you want Chinese TV to be as provincial as American TV?

Michael,
Loved the show, nicely done for Chinese television. Keep up the writing and thanks for taking time out from your life as a Chinese media sensation to have brunch with us little people.
Cheers.

@jake
stop putting words in my comment. never said that. i just dont want chinese tv to portray foreigners as something more special than they really are, and i detest how chinese people praise these worthless untalented foreigners becasue they can speak a little chinese. i.e. that idiot on cctv 9 from canada who has a show that teaches chinese.
there are tens of millions of Chinese people who speak english as a second language infinitely better than any western expat living here in china, do you think they are praised in the west?
so i say to my fellow chinese, lets start treating foreigners how western countries treat us.
reciprocity rules the day.

@cripe:
"so i say to my fellow chinese, lets start treating foreigners how western countries treat us."
Good idea. First, you will need to make it easier for foreigners to become permanent residents of China and Chinese citizens. Second, you will need to have many more foreign-owned businesses in Beijing and Shanghai. You will also need to allow "Americatowns", "Francetowns", "Germantowns" and "Russiatowns" in your major cities, with signs in English, French, German, etc. You will need to always have at least one English-speaking worker on duty at all times in your banks, post offices, etc. Then the situation for foreigners in China will be somewhat closer to what it is like for Chinese in large cities the U.S.
Posted by: Jake Holman at June 15, 2008 11:43 PM
Oh yes, and don't forget the foreign-owned malls and apartment complexes that are for foreigners only--just like the Chinese-owned businesses here in Los Angeles. As well as making sure that Chinese understand that Chinese "need not apply" for employment in these foreign-owned businesses--as, for example, my white neighbor was not allowed to lease a business in a Chinese-owned mall, a white friend was told that a Chinese-owned apartment complex was for "the Asian community only", and another white friend was informed that he need not bother applying for work at a Chinese-owned realty company because "Our clients only feel comfortable with their fellow Asians."
Is this what you mean by reciprocity?
Posted by: Jake Holman at June 15, 2008 11:58 PM
foreigners get tax breaks, and better incentives to invest in china than local chinese.
and all those Chinese you speak of, living nicely in the us, many of them are second generation chinese, or educated people from china that immigrated.
thats what America's does to foreigners, indian lawyers drive cabs, and Chinese engineers work in restaurants.
and i was talking from a cultural perspective
foreigners have it good in china, and they are allowed in easily, except now cause of the olympics. but do you know how hard it is for a chinese to go to america?
and when he gets there, do you think he gets to go on tv, and is praised and is welcomed into some many social groups like westerners are in china?
no, they treat chinese and other asians as some yellow vermin taking jobs, and spots in universities.
im just saying lets start treating foreigners how they treat us, a people should not be praised because of what country they come from or what language they speak or what color their skin is.
asian people are portrayed negatively in western media, both countries, and individuals, so we should do the same.
to the Chinese people, westerners treat us like crap back in their home countries, so we should do the same.

@cripe:
From one Chinese to another Chinese... get over it, man. Your mindset is suffering from a bit of 19th century stress, I think. The vast majority of people in the states do not think of Chinese as "yellow vermin". It's just a small minority that think so, just like it's just an equally small minority in China that think foreigners are (still) the devil. Sometimes minorities in any country face hardships, sometimes they don't, but even if you feel they're being treated better that doesn't mean you should organize some kind of resistance against them and chase them out; please step into the 21st century, where national borders have become a little less meaningful.

ok there yiu cho, your probably jake or some other westerner in here who loves demonising china.
and if you are really chinese, you are one of those many spineless yes men who do anything, their western boss tells them to do.
Posted by: cripe at June 16, 2008 10:32 AM
@Yiu-cho:
Thanks for telling the truth. There are good and bad people both in the west and China. Seems so simple as to go without saying.
@cripe:
Show me where "I love demonising China". I simply said that the idea that the Chinese treat us better than we treat them is untrue, in my opinion. Can't write more, or my Chinese boss will be displeased. She's a nice lady. I have nothing more to say to you. Maybe some day you will grow up, I hope.
Posted by: Jake Holman at June 17, 2008 12:23 AM
@ cripe:
I'm not really sure where I crossed you to warrant you calling me a "spineless yes man" of some invisible power. I have no idea who Jake is, and I think it's kind of silly for you to think this is some kind of conspiracy to argue back against you when, really, it's just two different people that share the same position. I also have no idea what you're talking about when you talk about my "western boss" because that's a very broad generalization about the West that could only possibly be used by someone that perhaps needs to broaden their mind a bit on the world. A rational mind wouldn't generalize in such a way by saying "The West is evil" or "Chinese people are the sick men of east asia".
I was merely telling you that not everyone hates each other as much as you think or hope. I live in China and I love my country as much as my Chinese brothers or sisters in the flat next door, and I'm just as defensive of my country as them, but I don't think treating different people with disrespect is a defensible position, to be honest.
The world suffers from enough post-Cold War syndrome as it is, why do you feel the need to exacerbate it? There's enough forces out there that want to provoke a second Cold War between China and the United States, and we don't need more potentially intelligent people like you adding to the discourse in a backwards manner. I think if you devoted your energy more to understanding the relations between East and West, the history, the on-the-ground opinion, and why things are the way they are, I think you could contribute very positively, like many people on this news blog do. There is no need to just launch vitriolic acid at people in one direction or another, because we're all here to discuss things, and not to debase this blog by turning into one big CNN Crossfire episode.
