Haiku for the Sugar Beet Harvest

Backbreaking labor
by prisoners and peasants
makes our lives sweeter.

As always, you can mouse-over each picture for a brief explanation. Continue below for a closer look at those prisoners, who are understandably surprised to see a laowai photographing them in the middle of nowhere.

Wow. I must be really, really bored if I'm finding myself amused by sugar beets. Oh, and also...

HAPPY HALLOWEEN! Bwah hah hah hah hah.

Beets are pretty scary, I have to admit.

One beat
Two beat
Three beat
Sugarbeet
My heart beats for you.

Army farmers! Whatever next?

I'm thinking rocks are next... Where do rocks come from? How are they broken? Who loads them onto trucks? Where do they go?

Good to hear you're still alive after the collapse of your favorite website, BJD.

Hey, who won the peace mission 2007 caption contest?

Posted by: chinaqanda at November 1, 2007 04:27 PM

I never thought I'd see so many beats in my life (and my grad school was founded by the Beats).

@chinaqanda:

Nobody won, because I didn't think that any of the entries really stood out. None of them really made me laugh, although some elicited perhaps one chuckle. You win, though, for person most interest in my crappy caption contests.

I just don't think people really enjoy my contests, although I may do them again in the future if I find a really funny photo.

I can't believe none of them made you laugh? Many people emailed me saying they could not stop laughing after reading my captions! One wealthy reader offered me a job as an office jokester. Another proposed marriage.

You need funnier photos, if you want funnier captions. Check out photo links for ideas.

Haiku for the Haiku for the Sugar Beet Harvest:

Five, seven, and five:
The syllables on my screen
On the beat harvest.

I wonder if the authorities see a problem with peasants and prisoners being in the same category, doing the same work?

When a government has 1.3 billion people under its power, it is stunning how little it can care for the individual.

just passed by, impressed by your article and pictures, and comments of other people, as a mainland Chinese spending 2 years in Europe and will go back Beijing for Chinese New Year, I donot know how to say, what to say, and what I can and I should say.

Anyway, thanks.
