Uyghur Pop. Not Uyghur Pop.
Your response to the music videos I posted last week was overwhelmingly positive. So, in the spirit of keeping you amused and attracting a few more readers to this site, I am presenting here today not one, not two, but three new music videos from my Xinjiang VCD collection.
The first video is another surefire hit from those three Uzbekistani Uyghur girls... they proved quite popular last week if my Google Video stats are correct. This time, the girls are strutting their stuff smack in the middle of Urumqi's Grand Bazaar and wearing more traditional Uyghur garb. (Thanks to Kelvin Yew, who's detective work identified the group's name: Xahrizada.)
This is Uyghur pop:
This is NOT Uyghur pop:
The next video features music by Uyghurs, but you can't really call it Uyghur music. How could a real Uyghur write this crap? I mean, they're wearing Uyghur clothing and doing Uyghur dances and all... but they're singing in Chinese, the music is awful and the whole thing looks a lot like propaganda. If your Chinese is good enough to understand what they're singing about in this video, please let me know.
The final video isn't Uyghur music at all. In fact, it's not really even Xinjiang music. Now that you mention it, it's not even a music video... welcome to the strange world of Chinese karaoke! The following KTV clip is set to Daolang's song, "Respectable Chairman Mao." Oddly, it juxtaposes images of Mao founding the People's Republic with stock footage of smiling, dancing Uyghurs. What the #%@$&!? I think this is pushing the whole Daolang - Xinjiang connection a bit too far...

The lyrics for that third video are unbelievably ridiculous. I'm amazed the Uyghurs who danced for this video haven't been assassinated yet for the shamelessness.
The comment above was posted by Vincent at April 1, 2006 07:03 AM unofficial Xinjiang time.
In defense of the Uyghurs seen dancing in the Daolang karaoke video... I don't think they were actually dancing for this particular song. I'm pretty sure that all of the Uyghur dancing is either stock footage or stolen from another video.
The comment above was posted by michael at April 1, 2006 11:14 AM unofficial Xinjiang time.
"Everyone under heaven loves you, Chairman Mao."
"Chariman Mao, day and night I'm thinking of you."
=D I certainly hope the Uyghurs in the video were unwilling participants of this crazy song!
The comment above was posted by Vincent at April 2, 2006 01:16 AM unofficial Xinjiang time.
The title of the second video is 亚克西, or yakexi. Yakshee in Uyghur means good (as in, as you know Micheael, yakshee musiz?).
The comment above was posted by davesgonechina at April 2, 2006 03:22 AM unofficial Xinjiang time.
I don't understand Chinese but I like the second song a lot.
The comment above was posted by Bebe at April 2, 2006 11:17 PM unofficial Xinjiang time.
Regarding the Chinese music/ dancing Uyghurs video...
i might be wrong, but i quite think that that might be one of the many, many Uyghur folk songs that were 'recomposed' by Wang Luo Bin years ago. He cashed in big on his Chinese-ified recordings of Xinjiang (particularly Uyghur) folk music though i'm sure you're familiar with all that.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wang_Luobin
people always referenced that crap whenever i mentioned weiwu'er min ge anywhere in the East.
i recall that you could hear his versions of Uyghur songs in Urumqi public squares some days - followed by the quiet disgusted sighs from the local pals I had there.
The comment above was posted by Fausto at April 3, 2006 02:38 AM unofficial Xinjiang time.
some snippets of the lyrics from the second song:
beginning
"The golden sun shines upon Xinjiang
The bountiful cotton fields roll with silver waves
The machines pick cotton and make rumbling sounds
The cotton they pick is like the mountain
Big cars and planes are traveling in all directions
Xinjiang's cotton spreads under the heavens"
then the chorus goes "yakexi yakexi!
what's yakexi?
Xinjiang's cotton is yakexi!"
it goes on to talk about Xinjiang's oil, "how beautiful the freeway is!", transportation, and development, calling them all yakexi. so you could make a very strong argument for calling it propaganda.
The comment above was posted by zmon at April 4, 2006 07:54 AM unofficial Xinjiang time.
"Yakexi" is the Mandarin transliteration of the Uyghur word "yakshe", which means good. Correspondingly, the Uyghur equivalent of "ni hao" is "yakshemessis".

Thanks for putting up those videos - amazing insight into real and up-to-date Uyghur culture.
The comment above was posted by another michael at April 4, 2006 08:54 PM unofficial Xinjiang time.
I think the girls in Shahrizoda might actually be ethnic Uzbeks. One of my commenters said he didn't know if they were really Uyghur, and another just said that they are Uzbeks who have made a name for themselves in China. It's all hard to say what's what considering the languages are almost identical, but this guy says they definitely are singing in Uzbek.
The comment above was posted by Nathan Hamm at April 5, 2006 02:34 AM unofficial Xinjiang time.
Just want to say Daolang is fantastic. Love ALL his songs; his unique voice; the lyrics he wrote. It is through him that I'm beginning to read up more about Xinjiang..
The comment above was posted by SK Yeo at April 5, 2006 04:53 PM unofficial Xinjiang time.
yeah - I'll have to second Sir Hamm's comment. i pointed my hip Uyghur pal in Urumqi to that video and he said that they are definately Uzbek-Uzbeks and not Uzbek-Uyghurs. He said that a handful of Uzbek pop groups have been doing up modern versions of Uyghur folk songs, etc and performing around Xinjiang, etc. but that's the great thing about pop music there - it's fairly international
The comment above was posted by Fausto at April 6, 2006 06:05 AM unofficial Xinjiang time.
I stand corrected then. I was told repeatedly by Uyghurs in Xinjiang that Xahrizada were a Uyghur group, so the perception is out there...perhaps they like to keep it that way to improve their popularity. I can say, however, that Mominjan Ablekim (the performer in the "More Uyghur Pop" video) is definitely Uyghur .
The comment above was posted by michael at April 6, 2006 10:22 AM unofficial Xinjiang time.
any chance you could post videos elsewhere? Unfortunately Google has chosen not to allow those of us actually in China to view their videos... nice site otherwise.

wow, everybody,
i just discovered this site and i'm frankly amazed. i feel ashamed that i (an ethnic Uigur) don't know as much about my history, culture and contemporary developments in Xinjiang, as some of you have. let alone Uigur pop culture. i was born and raised outside of China though - my grandparents were refugees from Xinjiang into the USSR during the Cultural Revolution.
so, i'm very russified and now - americanized. however, the Uigur identity in me is longing for its cultural and ethnic roots. i intend to learn my language (although i do speak the conversation version of it pretty fluently), script, history and culture. and to contribute to the liberation struggle for our land. i hope one day to go back there and see how my people are living. i know it's a devastating site, but i feel like i have to see it and to feel the pain of my Uigurs.
lastly, i wanted to comment on the impostor "uigur" videos - they're just proposterous. i was really mad and aggravated to see how they are unscrupulously using and appropriating uigur culture to spread their propaganda messages. i'm just outraged with everything that's going on in Easter Turkestan (that's what i prefer to call it), but i'm running out of time to write more at the moment.
i wanted to thank you for having this amazing site up and i'll definitely be back!

I'm pretty sure that these girls are singing in Uzbek. I have studied both Uzbek and Uighur, and the dead giveaway (even to a novice student of the language such as me) comes when they sing the word for "may you have fun/enjoy [yourself]" (third person optative conjugation): they use the Uzbek form of "oynasin" rather than the Uighur "oynasun". It is only a single vowel change in a single syllable, but it is definitely the Uzbek form of the verb.
The comment above was posted by Justin Jacobs at April 26, 2006 01:41 PM unofficial Xinjiang time.
Who woulda thunk that there were people out there simultaneously studying Uzbek and Uyghur? Well... with all of this expert testimony, I'm going to have to conceed that Xahrizada are singing in Uzbek.
But Uyghurs still love it!
The comment above was posted by michael at April 26, 2006 04:51 PM unofficial Xinjiang time.
can some1 tell me, what the 3rd song is all about?
The comment above was posted by zhang at May 7, 2006 08:27 AM unofficial Xinjiang time.
the 3rd one is just crap...shame on chinese who use uyghur culture as a propaganda to promote
the chinese ambition.
i wish there would be some chinese people reading these messages down here, listen
to the real voice from uyghurs instead of being
brain washed by Mao...
again, i could imagine wat a chinese person
would say when seeing these messages here:
"xinjiang has been part of china, uyghurs r from
central asia"...
the pathetic race---chinese
The comment above was posted by jk at May 8, 2006 11:15 AM unofficial Xinjiang time.
Language really has nothing to do with it since the Uyghurler in Uzbekistan usually speak Uzbek and are classified as Uzbeks by the government even though they are Uighur. However, they can usually speak Uighur as well, but it will always be mixed with a lot of Uzbek. One song is an old time Uighur song. Besides all that the Turkic linguistics are artificial generalizations for the most part since we are really talking about dialects of one language without actual boundaries. My guess is that they are "Uyghur girls from Uzbekistan".

The comment above was posted by wajid Ali at June 13, 2006 12:24 PM unofficial Xinjiang time.
i really think the daolang song is freaking evil. the title 'salamu' means 'salaam. the traditional greeting in islam (i think it means peace be upon you)
every uighur i know here in shanghai has expressed emotions about 'chinese xinjiang' that are the complete opposite of that song. its a bit like a hebrew song for hitler, a chinese love song for the ww2 japanese military, or a jesus loves you song for iraqis
The comment above was posted by darren taylor at June 16, 2006 01:15 PM unofficial Xinjiang time.
The third video is actually an very old song, which is probably also from Wangluobin. Just 20 years ago, this kind of song praising Chairman Mao and Communist Party is very common. Daolang reiterates this song with some new elements just for fun. Someone who produces a new song with lyric like this would be considered as an unimaginable idiot. Many singers sing old songs for many different reasons. These songs, no matter how wierd they sound today, were the songs that may accompanied their yourth, or that their parents may enjoy very much. Zheng Jun is another singer famous for reinterpreting old communist-style songs. After Zheng Jun's interpretation, these songs feel like modern songs with a reminiscent mood. However, Cuijian, a Chinese pioneer for rock'n roll, tends to add lots of irony into those old songs, making them sound more ridiculous.
The comment above was posted by Daniel at August 7, 2006 01:29 PM unofficial Xinjiang time.
Your guys are lacking the knowledge of history here.
First, clear the song. The 2nd song is like a tourist promotion song that boasts the good things of Xinjiang, and invites people to visit there. The 3rd one is actually a very old song that talked about an old Uyghur man who rides his mute to Beijing. By prasing Chairman Mao, you have to understand when Mao pushed for his land reform, there are plenty poor folks--no matter what their ethnicity who were benefited first (at expense of rich folks), so Mao did have some real fans from those beneficiers.
Second, technical speaking, the name of Eastern Turkstan is a wrong name. The area between Kunlun and Tianshan was used to be part of West Turk Empire. The East Turk was the one includes today's Mongolia, Inner Mongolia, Manchuria, and whatever north of those place in today's Russia and some parts of other Chinese northern province. Also technically Uyghur is not Turk themself (many of Turks merged into Chinese Hans), rather Tiele tribes who was called Dingling who was originated in west region of Lake Berka.

I would like to know what the lyrics for the Oynasun song stand for? These girls are awesome, especially for that tune that just sticks to your head...almost like Billy Jean.

I studied Uyghur for a couple of years in XJ. I really loved it when Xahrizada came out with this CD/VCD. I love music, and as a way to study language, my teacher helped me to transcribe the lyrics, and in the process, I learned that they are (as far as my friends knew) Uzbek. I would agree that they're singing in Uzbek, as many words (especially in their other songs) are prounounced just a tad different than Uyghur.
I agree that the second song (and when Chinese try to speak Uyghur) is absolutely horrendous to the ears. yakaxi? salamu? Makes me cringe, especially that Uyghurs are singing it!
And about Dao Lang... :O~ I used to like him when I was there... but it was sooo overplayed EVERYWHERE -- at the department store, outside in the city square, in small shops. He paraded his songs as "ethnic XJ songs", whereas he isn't even native to XJ, but to Sichuan. One of the most appalling things is that on one of his CDs, there is supposedly some Uyghur script as a name of the CD -- however, it is gibberish and makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. At least he can make sure it actually means something! It's like people who wear clothes with chinese characters but have no idea what it means.

O_O even Dao Lang write song like "Salam Chairman Mao"????? OMG this is scariest thing ever "imagine in Dao Lang get zapped in his aft life"... I think if they make like real Uyghur pop with real Uyghur people, it would way better off with everyone :S
As a Han (?!?! actually i dont even know my ethnicity, but oh well) person myself who grew up Hong Kong, I feel pretty sad that I didn't know anything know CHinese's diversity (like many HK people living in the colony) until like, well, last two years??? I do appreciate you guyz go to that western part of China as not too many people would put their focus on there.
Anyhow, first time I am here, and I saw your pix of Hong Kong. I laugh so hard when i see the picture of construction, hehehe what do you guyz think abt it?!
