Has anyone seen this article? I haven't heard about this incident anywhere, but it seems to indicate that Chinese authorities are damn serious about cracking down on growing civil unrest. Ouch!
China soldiers kill 4 over land dispute in south - villagers
7 December 2005
Xinhua Financial Network (XFN) News
BEIJING (XFN-ASIA) - Soldiers in southern China's Guangdong province killed four people when they opened fire on more than 1,000 villagers protesting the construction of a power plant, residents said. The clash happened yesterday evening in Dongzhou village in Shanwei city when hundreds of officers from the People's Armed Police -- a unit of the People's Liberation Army -- were sent in to disperse the villagers, residents told Agence France-Presse.
"The People's Armed Police entered the village, they opened fire and shot to death four people," said a villager by telephone. "Two died in a local hospital and two were taken to a hospital in Shanwei's urban center, but they died too," he said before his phone appeared to be cut off.
A teacher at the Dongzhou Middle School said he did not see the incident because he lived outside the village but learned about it when he arrived at work today.
"It's mainly because of land dispute. Compensation was one of the problems," said the teacher, who declined to be named.
When contacted by Agence France-Presse, Shanwei city police and city government officials said they did not have any knowledge of the incident and declined to comment further.

Well..no wonder if you get your news from Xinhua. BTW, non-Chinese statistics I've seen quote a minimum of 20 dead.
