90% of the world's diversifolius poplar trees (meaning the leaves on a single tree are diverse) are in China. 90% of China's diversifolius poplar trees are in Xinjiang, growing on the edge of the Taklamakan Desert along the Tarim River. The best time of the year to see this awesome spectacle is around the first of November, when the leaves of the tree turn an electric golden color. (November 2005)

Heading west from Yulixian towards the desert, we passed a number of massive cotton factories in the process of collecting Xinjiang's 2005 cotton harvest.

The diversifolius poplar trees are awesome against the still waters of the Tarim River and the sands of the Taklamakan.

Camilla poses atop a sand dune with her proposed sand-sled. It didn't work.

I'll be damned if I'm gonna pass up a chance to fly over the desert in an ultra-light aircraft (think of a flying motorcycle) for Y200. Camilla managed to snap this shot as I made a close pass overhead.
