It's called "The Iron Gate" because Silk Road traders and travellers had no choice but to pass between these two well-defended mountains. The dirt path along the left bank of the river is part of the actual Silk Road.

These graves are part of a famous Uyghur story. A long time ago, there was a princess, Tzuohla, who loved a simple shepherd, Tayir, much to her father's dismay. Her father, the king, arranged for her to marry a prince, so she ran off on a horse with her lover. The king sent troops to pursue them, and while crossing over these mountains they fell to their deaths.

There's a Chinese song about the Iron Gate:
Iron Gate Pass at world's edge,
Few travelers to be seen.
One lowly official closes the gate,
All day just see stone walls.
Mountain bridge, a thousand dangerous steps,
Narrow road, winds between sharp cliffs.
I climbing west tower to look,
One glance and my head turns white!
