A Terrible Joke

Another week teaching the unfortunate children of Qinghai... another batch of photos for my faithful readers:

And now for a dangerous and inappropriate joke that I repeat here only so that the vigilant among you can seek out and destroy similar humor should you stumble upon it.

A Japanese guy, an American backpacker, a Han Chinese man, and a local Tibetan are riding on a bus.

The Japanese guy is listening to the latest and greatest mp3 player, but after a short while he tosses it out the window. The Chinese man asks him, "Why would you throw out a new mp3 player?" To which the Japanese guy responds, "In my country we have so many mp3 players that the one I got rid of was basically worthless."

A few minutes later, the American is observed opening a carton of expensive American cigarettes. He cracks open a single pack, smokes two or three of them, and then tosses the whole carton out the window. The Chinese man asks him, "Why would you throw out a whole carton of imported cigarettes?" The backpacker responds, "In my country we have so much tobacco that a single carton is basically worthless."

Having overheard these conversations, the Tibetan local grabs the Chinese man and throws him out the window.

Don't even think of laughing, punk! Once again, this joke is not meant to be funny... it's only meant to serve as an example of the sort of humor you should never, ever engage in. Tibet is not a country and throwing Chinese people out of windows is ill-advised.

I heard that one, but in the version I heard, the American threw the tibetan and the chinese dude out of the window along with his smokes and ipod.

However came up with that joke obviously doesn't realize how much the gov't taxes cigarettes. In not retelling this clearly not funny joke I won't be replacing cigarettes with cell phones. Which Americans are clearly obessed with.

I almost fell out of my chair at "throwing Chinese people out of windows is ill-advised."

Those are some cool photos, too. That coat looks warm... could I borrow it for my trip to New Jersey?

coHAHAHAHAugh.. sorry.. must be the air quality - always makes me cough.

Great photos. Love the expressions on the kids' faces. They go from shy to sly to in complete fear of the big white guy.

Posted by: The Humanaught at January 22, 2008 09:19 AM

Hmm. Many Uyghurs tell a more or less identical joke. It has a better structure, though.

The Japanese guy throws his MP3/CD/MiniDisc or what have you out the window, and the American is shocked.

The American throws his cigarettes out the window and the Han Chinese is shocked.

The Uyghur throws the Han out the window.

I've heard this countless times since I showed up in Xinjiang, even from very Han-friendly people. It also appeared quoted, I believe, in an article by Gardner Bovingdon.

mental note:

"cancel plan to throw landlord out of window"

Posted by: nick at January 23, 2008 12:05 PM

I didn't laugh.

Posted by: victor bravo at January 23, 2008 03:14 PM

Funny Joke. Tibet used to be its own country. That can't happen now so I support meaningful autonomy and putting a cap right now on the influx of Han. Shame on you for adapting the draconian party line. Long live His Holiness the Dalai Lama!

Posted by: Avoiceforvoiceless at January 23, 2008 07:23 PM

I have to say, it is stunning just how much like a gatekeeper that gatekeeper looks. I can practically hear him saying "En-ter" (Although presumably in Tibetan) (Also, the dash is meant to convey a dramatic pause between the syllables).

And I've heard variations of the joke stateside, although I can't exactly remember it.

Posted by: Tiako at January 24, 2008 04:23 AM

HA HA HA, brilliant, I could have used that one in Litang

Posted by: Lucas at January 24, 2008 09:59 PM

Is grinning allowed?

Posted by: Daniel at January 25, 2008 02:37 AM

The truth is that White American throw indian out of their land, Chinese throw tibetan and other minorities out of their lands too. Very similar.

As Galton pointed out that prodoctive people will replace non-productive hunter-gather throughout human history. Like it or not, read Guns Germs & Steel by Diamond and you will find such process inevitable.

what a pathetic theory....himmmmmmm F for your history. a book is not a holy scrip, well, err to be human.

Posted by: wang at January 26, 2008 07:38 AM

One vile, dirty jew in China is one too many. But I can't understand why this jew so popular with China girls?

Posted by: chau at January 26, 2008 07:58 PM

Did you hear the one about throwing the jew down the well?

Posted by: ouyang at January 27, 2008 09:26 AM

Don't you think your disclaimer reeks of cowardice? Or are Chinese people too stupid to understand a joke?

Posted by: Ben at January 28, 2008 03:47 AM

Perhaps you could explain how you would differentiate between a plain tongue-in-cheek style and a cowardly style of writing. Are you comfortably sure that yours is the former? To me, having now read a few more of your pieces, it seems that you choose to write as a coward.

I can understand the people who fight authoritarians and I can understand the people who want to be authoritarians. But I don't understand the people who serve authoritarians.

Posted by: Ben at January 28, 2008 04:17 AM

P.S.
You seem to be widely enough read now to be attracting comments from anti semitic morons. Congratulations and commiserations.

Posted by: Ben at January 28, 2008 04:29 AM

Anti-semitic morons? Moron should be the word you use for your people who ought to be thrown out for behaving badly in someone else's country.

Posted by: Chau at January 29, 2008 07:09 AM

This joke is spot on! I'm grinning ear to ear now, thanks Mike! Keep those pics coming, its good to see that ugly pig jabbas haven't driven the culture fully out of the Tibetan people. As long as that happens there is always hope that Tibet will regain its independence from the filthy clutches of Geidi Prime!

What a truly vibrant people and culture. Now let's compare to pics of Wuhan, Wuxi, Suzhou, Lanzhou, Taiyuan or other wonderful Chinese **ities.

Posted by: nanheyangrouchuan at January 29, 2008 01:30 PM

Ben, You seem lack a certain perspicacity. Perhaps it is merely a question of your circumstances, ie. you live in the free world and have not stopped to consider the possibility that others cannot express their unreflected views so frankly as you. I take you by your language to be an American. Was it not an American who said something about reading a book as deliberately and reservedly as it was written? But that was in another age, wasn't it?

Posted by: linmeimei at January 29, 2008 03:44 PM

I'm reading the words of an American (and - of additional significance - someone of Jewish heritage) written in 2008. His style is cowardly.
Do you really disagree, Linmeimei?
Btw - I'm actually Scottish.

Posted by: Ben at January 29, 2008 04:24 PM

Ben, No, I don't agree. But, you didn't answer my question. Where are you writing from? And, I will add, why should being jewish have any bearing on things? Funny, the scots were always a very canny bunch with a language that is not even their own. Try considering that for some, their words will have actual consequences. In such a case, perhaps another word would be more accurate?

Posted by: linmeimei at January 29, 2008 04:43 PM

The actual consequences of Michael's freely chosen style is the legitimisation of authoritarianism and repression.
The reward can be seen in picture 3.
I'm writing from New Zealand - where I'm on holiday. I live in Taiwan - where over 1000 Chinese missiles are pointed at me.
Those missiles are there because Taiwanese people would like their independence recognised and the Chinese government would rather murder them.
Perhaps Michael can tell you why being of Jewish heritage might be of additional significance.

Posted by: Ben at January 29, 2008 06:07 PM

I completely disagree. 1)Anyone with intelligence is free to draw their own conclusions, and Michael's style more than freely permits that. Moreover by providing actual information on Xinjiang he permits people who wish to think about the situation more material to consider. 2) How does he "legitimise authoritarianism" exactly? By which I mean, could you provide an arguement as opposed to a statement. 3) Are you really a simplistic literalist? 4) Do you really take political polemic for reality? I thought only American Republicans were that naive. 5) Talking about cowards, why don't you specify your coments about Jews? I lived for 8 months in Israel, and for a year in a neighbouring country. I know all about the history of Jews, Arabs and modern Europe. I don't draw conclusions about anybody based on history, however. Finally, who elected you the spokesman of anyone. Surely they can speak for themselves. Incidentally, you did not address my last question, but perhaps you do not have any experience with the case which would be a prerequiste for judgement as opposed to mere doxa (opinion).
Try not to take things personally. Perhaps you could involve yourself in the Scottish Parliament if you need political involvement.

Posted by: linmeimei at January 29, 2008 06:49 PM

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll do that.

Posted by: Ben at January 29, 2008 08:06 PM

Sorry to bring this back down a few levels: that joke can be applied to any people, minority, majority as you please. It should remain, even in China, what it is: a simple tale outlining reality. The best joke is the disclaimer, and it is so well written that you can either bitch about it or laugh, as was forbidden.

Posted by: andre at January 29, 2008 08:51 PM

I like these types of jokes,a good insight into the peoples hatreds. I was in Romania last year and on my way to the Ukraine, on the Romanian side people told me "don't go,you will be raped and killed" and on the other side of the border the Ukranians all said "How did you survive Romania without being killed and raped?". However none of the people I met had actually crossed the border. Is it relevant to your joke? Probably not so I will shut up.

Posted by: benjamin at January 29, 2008 09:08 PM

I think Ben is a bit of an idealist. He probably believes that the only acceptable way to express your views is to be the man in front of the tracked armoured combat vehicle. That may appeal to the romantic hidden in all of us but one can't deny the value of being rational. Oscar Schindler and Raoul Wallenberg proved that.

Posted by: historybuff at January 30, 2008 07:54 AM

That dirty nanheyeanschun Indian shit is such a joke. That disguesting country of yours got shit beat out in the 1962 war against China. The first lesson indian soldiers learn is how to surrender properly. Nowadays, that freaking country of yours has to link itself with China. How pathetic is that! Everytime when I check news on China, a ton of them are from indian newspapers. It is either "India and China are going to save the world.....", or "India and China are going to dominate the world....." We do not want to have anything to do with the damn indians or your country. Try to dominate and save the world by yourself please!

Posted by: liu at January 30, 2008 08:31 AM

This dirty jew with half of his dick already cut off may risk losing his other half before long. Of course, it will still be much bigger than mine!

Posted by: Chen at January 30, 2008 09:06 AM

No, I'm not an idealist.
My experience of China (been there many times - never to xinjiang - and speak the language but reside on the other side of its growing power) is different from his. His moral perspective is therefore likely to differ slightly from mine.
I just wanted to ask if Michael had really thought about the style in which he writes and if he was totally comfortable with it.

Posted by: ben at January 30, 2008 10:13 AM

@Ben:

Yes, I have thought about the style in which I write, and I'm comfortable with it. But I can see that living in Taiwan, with your endless supply of delicious Pearl Milk Tea, sandwich meats, and cheese you might see things differently from me. There's no sense in "keeping it real" just to get my site banned, is there?

See what happens When Keepin' It Real Goes Wrong (or here because YouTube sucks in China).

Posted by: michael at January 30, 2008 12:52 PM

Fair enough.

Your and my idea of what may get your site banned differ significantly.
It's easy to be sanctimonious when it's someone else's risk - but I just wanted to remind you that being overly cautious is cowardly and, in an increasingly powerful China, has real - and global - effects.

All the best to you.

Posted by: Ben at January 31, 2008 05:09 AM

And Ben, I would like to remind you that how Michael frames his jokes will have a very small effect on international politics. Personally, I got much more enjoyment from this way than if he had said "LOL funny joke!"

I mean, and I'm sure saying this will just kill Michael, but his site doesn't present much of a threat to the CPC.

Posted by: Tiako at January 31, 2008 08:53 AM

Ben is moron. This is just a joke. Maybe Ben is too stupid to understand a joke.

Posted by: joke at January 31, 2008 08:58 AM

I think nearly everyone would agree with you on the style, Tiako. That's why I thought I'd mention it.

I hope you can understand that growing emotionally attached to Taiwan and to long-time Tibetan neighbours gives you a different perspective. Things that you would once have found funny now make you feel distinctly uncomfortable.

I hope that everyone can understand that.

Posted by: Ben at January 31, 2008 12:57 PM

I've heard a version of it in Sichuan and it involved a Hongkonger, a Guangdong person, a Yunnanese and a Sichuanese. You figure out who got thrown out!

Posted by: BBC at February 1, 2008 11:08 PM

Thanks for sharing that "inappropriate" humor with us. There's serious meaning behind it.

Incidentally, Tibet may not be an independent country like it used to be but that doesn't mean it shouldn't be. I wonder what the Tibetan people would prefer? Hmmm.

Posted by: jay at February 6, 2008 01:15 PM

I cannot look at the faces of the children in the first picture without think about a comment I once read - by Ghandi I think it was. He said something about how he found the fact that millions of people of equal genius to Einstein had lived out their entire lives on dirt farms without realising even a part of their potential far more striking than any of Einstein's discoveries. Perhaps they will have a better future than that to look forward to, one can at least hope.

Posted by: FOARP at February 26, 2008 04:40 AM

My honorable friend, Mr Ben "the brave", who was living in a place that was not under the rule of chinese law, was viewing of Mr Micheal's writing fashin as cowardly. The reason is yet clearly known. It's very likely because of there was a lack of "the real" as it was shown in his mind. As one of thousands of cowards deadly needing instructions, I sincerely hope you could come to china and set up such a great model for us poor people but merely talk the talk at a safe and warm corner of this planet. Well, please do forget about that, actually what I really want to express is the fact of knowing chinese doesn't guarantee a proper knowledge of this big fellow. "No investigation,no words." At least for once, your dear chairman mao gets you there. Please, do let the one who has the first hand info speak and write in his own way.

PS: I love andre's joke so much. What a briliant remark on most of the comments posted here.

I think Mexico should get their land back,

Taxes should be retured to Mexico.

You people of the west are funiest people in
the world.

The black people in detroit should really wake up
and get an independent country for themselves, saving themselves from being always 2nd class citizens.

Actually no one in the free world dare to speak out loudly for communism, this is the fact of freedom of speech in US.

Posted by: hypocrites at February 27, 2008 11:16 PM

All you people are just brain washed into believing that your system is for every one.

Actually your system is to maintain the wellbeing of the 5% riches.

You have freedom to speak freely in your society only because your west are so rich and powerful through centuries of rubbing from the rest of the world that even your poor and underpriledged are well taken cared of enough and can find comfort and satisfaction by looking at the third world miserables.

Posted by: the truth at February 27, 2008 11:20 PM

So your poor are so satisfied that no much disturbance is roused to the extent that has some
efect like the arabs muslims had roused, otherwise your government will not stop by just being home land security, will be no better than another China.

Posted by: the truth at February 27, 2008 11:24 PM

Thanks for those wonderful pictures of Tibetans in Amdo (Ch: Qinghai). It's always wonderful to see pix of my fellow Tibetans but it also makes me sad to see how difficult their lives are under the Chinese occupation. I pray every day that we Tibetans will have our freedom back again.

Also, nice joke. I will share it w/ my fellow Tibetans.

Posted by: Wangchuk at March 7, 2008 01:49 AM

Never seen such a low IQ moron on a board.

According to his moronic logic, American Indians and Escomos natives who live a primitive life until today are impoverished because of white people's occupation of North America.

Tibetans in western society who end up washing dishes in resturants, cleaning up toilets are because of white people's discrimination.

Napalese people who resembles tibetans most in that both are snow mountain dwelling deep and high
and whose country is the poorest in the world must be due to previous British, American or present Indian occupation !!!???

Posted by: Fxxxchuk at March 8, 2008 09:31 PM

How funny is that chuky moronic logic,
Qinghai has some tibetan population then it should belong to tibet ?

Forgot the powerful Ming and Qing Dynasties that
subjugated the most powerful calvalry army in the world and tame the mongolian forces into peaceful dwelling people for 800 years ???

Why tibetan people were allowed to expand into Qinghai without check, instead of being drived away like the Huns ??? Is it because tibetans are more powerful than mongolians ???

The answer can only be, tibetans bowed down to the rule of Chinese emperors, so they are considered subjects of the Chinese empire, so that people had been allowed to infiltrated into each other freely, mixing together, blurring borders, and because tibetans were used to living high and han were used to living on level, the mixing was so smooth even not noticed.

Posted by: History Teacher at March 8, 2008 09:48 PM

Michael, as you are a partial supporter of Chinese Draconian law when it comes to Christians in China do you approve of the extreme measures carried out against Tibetans who have recently broken the law? Is it not all the one form of tyranny? Or is some of it good when it comes to torturing those you deem in error? James

Posted by: James at March 28, 2008 09:16 AM

Michael you also plagiarized an old Uyghur joke about the Han the Japanese and American that was getting told in Urumqi in the late 1980's. Give credit where credit is due. James

Posted by: James at March 28, 2008 09:17 AM

In the original: the Uyghur in the end says regarding the Han: "we got plenty of them here we wont miss one more."

This joke was very popular in Xinjiang in the late 1980s. Maybe adaptions. Any one know the original?

Posted by: James at March 28, 2008 10:13 AM

...and oh..the self righteousness of it all...?one should never,. never indulge in this type of humor..." etc . Why post it then???hmmm...
provocative and clever but unconvincing dear blogmeister

Posted by: james at March 30, 2008 09:16 AM

Micheal,

In "your" joke, the first charater is a Cuban throwing ciggars; the 2nd is Russian throwing Alcohol beverage; and the 3rd is an American throwing lawyare!
